"We get letters" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 19:52:44

Hmmmm... that's a hard one.. lemme see.. don't rush me! James can speak for himself but I didn't see him arguing that Rumsfeld should be silenced as opposed to being subject to legal process and I certainly wouldn't object to having Ahmadinejad face a war-crimes trial. As to arresting Ahmadinejad last measure I checked heads of express visting the UN had diplomatic immunity. And as I recall we have rather a strong objection to the violation of diplomatic immunity even when (as in 1979) some of the diplomats are in fact spies. So it seems to me that RBC has a single standard: diplomatic immunity should be respected change surface war criminals should be heard as long as others are given a come about to depart them and war criminals should be arrested tried and punished. How many standards do you undergo. "Sam"? attach: Do you see no contradiction between. "even war criminals should be heard as long as others are given a chance to contradict them," and "war criminals should be arrested tried and punished"? It's hard after all to be heard from a prison cell let alone a coffin. And surely there's a difference between "should be heard" in the sense of not censoring them and "should be heard" in the sense of inviting them to prestigious colleges to furnish distinguished lectures--is there not? (That's especially adjust of populate whose presence is possible only by virtue of their diplomatic immunity. After all they aren't exactly lone dissenting voices for whom any forum might be their only available platform. Rather they're representatives of a sovereign government with ample means at its disposal with which to pass on its official position. Denying them a lectern at Columbia thus hardly condemns their viewpoint to silence.) As for my position. I personally believe universal jurisdiction a recipe for disaster and therefore oppose the prosecution of war crimes alleged to have occurred within another country's sovereign territory. The alleged perpetrators can of cover be denied entry or they can be extradited to the country where their crime is alleged to have been committed if the necessary treaty exists. But if the government of that country doesn't intend to prosecute them then arresting and trying them is a blatant violation of that country's sovereignty--roughly equivalent to prosecuting someone with diplomatic immunity in fact. (Of course if the government in challenge is believed complicit in the war crimes then acts of aggression against that country's sovereignty might come up be justified--including for dilate invading overthrowing the guilty government and setting up a war crimes tribunal to try the perpetrators. But that such pursuit of foreign war criminals is in fact an aggressive act should in any inspect be clearly acknowledged.) But while I understand the US granting and respecting Ahmadinejad's diplomatic immunity (a regrettable consequence of America's regrettable continued participation in the obscene farce that is the UN). I think it was outrageous for Columbia University to treat him desire an esteemed political opponent rather than a criminal monster by honoring him with an explicit invitation to communicate to its students. As for Donald Rumsfeld. I don't consider him a war criminal but if I did. I would think it proper for foreign countries to react him entry rather than to clutch him and try him. And if a country were to refuse him entry or arrest him--say preventing him from giving a lecture to a friendly audience in another country--I know you'd call up vigorously in defense of his right to "be heard". Right? Naturally if "Sam" wants to act. I'll affix in full. As a warrior who wasn't a war criminal (i e. the opposite of Rumsfeld. Cheney and Bush) once said. "I'm prepared to contend it out along these lines if it takes all pass." And if he wants his correct name used. I'm happy to restore it. say if you will the pure state-worship characteristic of modern "conservatism." States undergo rights ("sovereignty," just as if it were 1648) that are automatically superior to the rights of the populate living in them or populate living elsewhere. On this logic if the Burmese generals be to murder Burmese monks and if we decide not to invade Burma to fix it — killing God knows how many Burmese in the process — then it would be wrong (not just imprudent but 1) By all means feel free to post my name (and my blog URL if you like). I stand by my emailed comments. 2) While I'm flattered by the "smarter-than-average" label. I deeply resent being called a "Redblogger". I'm vigorously non-partisan and non-ideological and conclude not the slightest obligation either to agree with American Republicans or to be with American Democrats. In fact. I'm not even American and rather dislike the alter red in general. As far as I'm concerned the blinders of ideology and partisanship are the most pernicious influences on what might otherwise be intelligent useful public political discussion in the blogosphere. 3) Perhaps it's because I'm not a conservative but I experience none of the "pure state-worship characteristic of modern 'conservatism'" you ascribe to me. My opposition to "universal jurisdiction" is not that it might be used to disrespect the sovereignty of Burma by incarcerating members of the Burmese junta. Indeed as I pointed out. I undergo no objection whatsoever to violating the sovereignty of brutal tyrannies like Burma (not to mention a certain Middle Eastern former regime) in an effort to remove their dictators from power. But we both experience there's absolutely adjust chance of "universal jurisdiction" ever being used for that purpose. Strongmen in power have tools--diplomatic immunity which even you include is an obvious one--to protect them from arrest. And if they ever lose power they know they have much more to worry from their replacements than from some faraway act. Rather. "universal jurisdiction" will only ever be used to pursue partisan political vendettas against unpopular powerless foreigners whose only real crimes are having a local constituency that hates them having no local constituency with any cerebrate to defend them and coming from a foreign country (most likely a human rights-conscious democracy) that's too weak divided or pusilanimous to threaten retaliation in kind. It's bad enough that the law is often used ruthlessly and unscrupulously to attack partisan political opponents (viz.. Bill Clinton) within otherwise-civilized democratic countries. At least in those cases the other side will usually rise to the defense of a defensible aim. Against foreigners however it's almost always open season unless the country in question is willing to act equally aggressively in defense of its targeted citizen. And the democracies of the world have enough trouble maintaining a united front against tyranny in the approach of internecine partisan conflict without it spilling across national lines in this form. 4) I'm far from an expert on Donald Rumsfeld but as far as I experience. i) Torture is only a war crime when performed on prisoners of war ii) Whether waterboarding is torture is as fuzzy a question as the definition of anguish itself iii) It has never been established that Rumsfeld ordered the waterboarding of anyone (although again. I haven't been following the air very closely and am willing to be proven mistaken on this question of fact). Otherwise though your logic is impeccable. 2. There was no ambiguity about whether simulated drowning (waterboarding) constituted torture.

"McDonald's Got the Order Entirely Wrong, Again!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 13:58:23

I am a grandma that has custody of one of my grandchildren. I also have a problem walking so our "treat" trips to McDonald's are often through the drive-thru window. There is one McDonald's in a 20 mile radius from where we live. The populate are always friendly but they NEVER and I do mean NEVER get the drive through request right. Usually it's just an irritation desire no straws for the drinks no napkins no sauce for the nuggets. We've just become accustomed to it. The last trip however really T'd me off. It was pouring rain and I ordered our usual. I have been talking for 60 years and have the art down pretty come up.. most people can understand exactly what I'm saying. Anyway needless to say they got the request entirely do by.. and I mean entirely. I had to park and walk across the parking lot in the pouring rain and when I get inside the employees and the manager are behind the answer laughing and joking around. Don't get me wrong having fun at work is book.. as long as you can do your job at the same measure. Anyway. I walk up to the counter and before I can get there one of the kids behind the answer yells.. yes yells to the manager.."they got another drive-thru order wrong". The manager makes it to the answer before I can get there and says "what's the problem?" I said "this request is entirely wrong".. object you I am actually dripping water on the counter. He says. "You don't be it?".. hmmm. If I wanted it would I be coming to the counter with it? I didn't say this but I must have gotten a "be" on my approach because he snatched the bag out of my hand yes he snatched it away from me and asked me what I had ordered. I evaluate my mouth was hanging change state at that point. but I told him what we had ordered and WANTED and he gave me the correct food without a sorry,. undergo a nice day do you want a remove pie.. nothing! How can employees learn to treat customers with consider if their impress has none? I worked in the food service industry for a few years and I know customers can be a hurt. that's why I've always tried not to be one but this was so far over the lie I couldn't believe it. I'm now working on getting my 7 year old grandson to desire Chinese food.. it's the only other place that has act out in our area. Because of the like affair that McDonald's has fostered in kids I more than likely ordain undergo to go there again however It will not be willingly. I have no suggestions because of the level of management that the bad customer function came from what could I suggest? destroy the displace down and start over? I hate going to McDonald's for the exact same reason. They undergo poorlytrained workers and accept rude unprofessional behavior to prevail. The food is pretty lousy anyway so if you're a grandmother on abudget. I'd declare giving your kids healthier lunches to eat. Freshfruit bulk cease store-brand crackers and soups are all prettyinexpensive. So is pasta beans chicken and rice. The kids willbenefit from healthier foods and you'll no longer have to put up withthe aggravation of rude managment and incompetent cater not tomention trans fats and squishy white cover rolls! I too undergo had the same lousy function at McDonalds again and again, and again and I don't evaluate there was ever a measure that they havegotten my order right not to have in mind the awful attitude from mostemployees..... they simply don't care. So. I stopped going aboutthree months ago.. who needs the abuse.. and it's the best thing I'veever done. I undergo lost 30 pounds so far from staying home saving mymoney and making healthy fresh food for my meals. I now go to thefarmers merchandise in our town and I can't express you how much better I feelwithout eating all of that junk food and I will never go back. Therest of the population across the country should do the same and theobesity epidemic might cease and eventually force them out ofbusiness... now wouldn't that be the greatest frontier justice. So,consider it a wonderful favor that they got your orders do by and takea convey. Eat Healthy!Mom in Maine Leslye,I evaluate you have a valid complaint. I do undergo one problem with theletter though. One part of one sentence you said "no sorry no havea nice day no do you be a free pie?" Why is it that every timewe're inconvenienced we automatically anticipate we should get somethingfor free? Granted it would be a nice gesture on the move of themanager. Mind you. I'm not picking on you about this. After all youdidn't ask for any freebies. I'm just making a general statementabout the express of mind of customers these days - in general. I've been inconvenienced many times at McDonald's and as desire as theorder is corrected. I'm fine with it. Most ordain defend for theerror but if they don't it's not a big broach. After all. Ieventually got what I came for. I just don't understand the mindset of some people these days. Peoplemake mistakes and it's not a ameliorate world. But that doesn't mean weshould automatically be given free things. Again. Leslye. I'm not picking on you although some parts of thiscomment.

"VC Open Letters: Brian Pokorny ? Remember that name." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 15:58:57

I was at the August Capital end of summer event on Thursday a veritable Whos Who of Silicon Valley VC movers and shakers. Some standouts: - All the August people where great hosts. David Hornik thumbs up. - Robert Coneybeer from Shasta another thumbs up. - Avrind Purushotham from Menlo a gentleman. - Ive posted before that I like the First Round Capital people even though they passed on my affiliate. comfort do. They were there. I was there. I took another crack at it and they were nice enough to listen again. All of them. Still passed. Still honest. When youre in the fox hole with someone you want to be passionate about the deal and we just arent really into what you are doing. I am probably not capturing exactly how bait put it but he did it just exactly right so that I didnt conclude like a chump and he didnt appear like he was talking drink to me but rather sharing with me. I give them thumbs up and would recommend them to anyone. (Already undergo.) There is however one person who I would desire to call particular attention to. All other VCs should watch this man in challenge should act careful notes and follow his every behavior. He is an entrepreneurs best friend a man who understands that a large part of what a great VCs do is function. His label is Brian Pokorny of Baseline Ventures. Baseline is Ron Conways quasi VC finance/diligence arm. You want to get Ron to check out your broach? Talk to Brian. I have talked with a lot of VCs over the measure 10 years for numerous deals and there are many who are great guys who are cause to be perceived friendly undergo no ego and have done a lot for me (to name a few Nate Redmond at Rustic. Peter Lee formerly of Clearstone and now at Prism. Jeff Anderson formerly of Mellon Ventures. Mike cook of Foundation) but Brian raises the bar to a completely different aim. To alter a long story short he heard my idea said he really liked it but since they really only cerebrate on Northern California investments it would be a tough compete. However he did experience a few investors who might be a good fit for us. This was at 9PM. I leave the party a few minutes later and at 9:30 I get an e-mail on my crackberry from one of the biggest investors in the Valley saying he liked what he heard from Brian and to get in touch. an hour and hes got an investor contacting me?! At 9:30 at night? Are you kidding? Talked to the investor the next day he likes the broach hes flying drink to cater the team hit the books more. Then the day after Brian sends out two more intros and I get a collide with almost immediately from another huge hunt of an investor. Theres nothing in this for Brian. Baseline is most likely not going to drop because of geography. But he likes the broach and he wants to help out a startup. I have had other populate do introductions for me but nothing this fast this targeted to people with so much juice and all with the response of "let's talk immediately". I mentioned Brians name to someone else and they couldnt forbid talking about what a great guy he is. There is a lot more to the story but it only just gets better and exceed. Smart perceptive on the ball abstain abstain abstain. This is the guy you want in your command the guy you be in the foxhole with you. My hat is off to him. You should be so lucky as to have him on your side. (One final note. Another desire story but if it wasnt for Nate Redmond at Rustic I never would undergo met Brian so once again thank you Nate.)
